Interviews and Surveys!

Hello everyone! This week  at TimeFireVR I have been mostly preparing for interviews. I plan to interview several members of the TimeFireVR staff about their personal and professional use with Virtual Reality headsets. The goal of these questions is to give the developer's perspective of which products they prefer and why. And this will help guide me to my very broad research question, which VR headset you should consider using. Of course "you" is a broad term, and I hopefully will be figuring out which headset should be used by which person.

I plan to interview an array of developers. I will question at least one artist, one programmer, one level designer, 1 sound designer, and my boss, John. Here is the full list of questions I have now; however, this is subject to change.

  1. Who are you and what do you do at TimeFireVR?
  2. Which Virtual Reality headsets have you used, would you buy this headset for your own personal use?
  3. As a game developer, what is your favorite headset to use? Why?
  4. As a consumer, what is your favorite headset to use? Why?
  5. Is it more difficult to create quality games and programs for virtual reality?
  6. Do you think consumers should be worried about a lack of content for VR?
  7. For the future of VR, which headset do you think will be the best in the long run?
  8. Do you personally see a successful future for VR technology? How do you see people incorporating it in their daily lifes?
I actually have not decided if I want to record with video or just type their response. I think recording it would be interactive. But I am not sure if I want to use it for my actual presentation.

For the future: I am also going to be conducting a survey soon! I will be surveying:

  • 2 children around 10
  • 2 Teenagers
  • 2 Adults 20 to 35
  • 2 adults above 40
I will be asking them to use 3 different types of VR headsets, supplied by TimeFireVR. It will be several weeks from now, but next week I will release my interview questions for them as well. But I plan to collect data from a low tier headset, Google Cardboard , mid-tier headset, Samsung Gear, and high-tier headset, the HTC Vive. But the location, time, and even how the entire test will carry out is still in the works.

If you would like to participate in the survey let me know! One with a background or interest in video games or even virtual reality. One with no history or involvement with video games or virtual reality. This feature will apply to each group of two participants.

Well that concludes this weeks update! Thanks for reading!

  1. Hi Griffin! Your questions sound super interesting and I can't wait to hear about how your surveys go! I was wondering.. what exactly are the differences in the 3 headsets that you discuss?

    Can't wait for next week!

    1. Basically price and function. Cardboard, is the cheapest VR headset. Basically you put your phone in it, and its actually made out of cardboard so its a really basic experience. The Gear is like the cardboard in that you put your phone in it. But its more comfortable, immersive, and has a better screen resolution. But it is a bit more expensive. The Vive would be for gaming, and has motion controls for your hands. And it exceeds the other two in every way. But it is of course a lot more expensive. And alongside it you need a high performance computer.

  2. What a great survey! When developing the programmers, will you also be taking into account both the subjects' ages and number of years of experience in the field? Taping the interviews is a great idea, as you can always later type up the notes.

Let me know if you need additional subjects! I have absolutely no prior history with VR but would be happy to help! :)

  3. Hey Griffin, I would be happy to volunteer for your survey, if you need someone in the 40+ category. As for your interview, if you don't choose to video the interview it might still be convenient for your to audio tape it so you don't have to slow down too much with writing or typing notes - then you can go back over some of the answers later...

Do you have a few suggestions of your personal, all-time favorite VR content?

    1. Thanks Mr. Bloom! I will keep you updated! I have only used a vr headset a handful of times. I have played one interactive game and watched some 360 videos. So I don't really have a comment on what my favorite content is.

  4. Hey Griffin! This sounds really interesting, and I can't wait to see the results of how the age of the user effects the results. In regards to the actual testing, how are you going to survey the users? Will it be question based or a kind of rating system?

  5. Hi Griffin! Your survey questions sound very interesting! I am excited to see what the responses will reveal. What's your personal opinion on the three headsets?

    1. Well they all serve their purpose. However, I personally am considering buying one for gaming. But they just released the price of the VIVE for consumers today for $800! So I am having second thoughts haha.
